Full-time Tenure-Track Faculty Position in the Television, Radio & Film (TRF) Department


The S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the Television, Radio & Film (TRF) Department to start August 20, 2018. Rank is negotiable and dependent on qualifications, including professional and/or university teaching experience. The successful candidate will primarily teach visual effects for television, film and emerging visual media fields.

Established in 1934, the TRF program is regarded as one of the best of its kind in the nation. The department's 18 full-time faculty members, complemented by a specialized adjunct force, prepare future leaders in the television, radio, film and interactive media industries by introducing students to practices and systems of production, distribution and exhibition and their economic, political and social impact on the world.

The TRF major is the largest and most versatile in the Newhouse School, with 500 undergraduates and 40 Master's students. The major consists of a mix of core requirements and an extensive array of elective coursework, which empowers students to customize their programs of study. Majors also study abroad—over 100 programs in 60 countries—and participate in semester-long industry immersions in our New York and Los Angeles professional study centers. Students in the program continue to earn national recognition of their creative work through film festivals and student Emmy and Telly awards.

Alumni pursue a wide variety of careers that include work as major market (mainly New York and Los Angeles) producers; directors; writers; designers; editors; executives; media educators; agents; and attorneys. They are found in numerous leadership positions and often return to campus to share their knowledge.

The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications has an international reputation for excellence and is home to over 1,900 undergraduate and 250 graduate students. The School is housed in a 250,000-square-foot, three-building complex that includes state-of-the-art classrooms, a 300-seat auditorium, a research center, an executive education wing, a café and many spaces for formal and informal meetings and collaboration among students, faculty and staff. Required Qualifications
Candidates must have significant professional experience in the practice of visual effects as it relates to television and film production, either as a director, producer or visual effects coordinator. Regardless of background, candidates will demonstrate excellent teaching skills and a strong potential to be a thought leader in the field of visual effects. Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree or higher preferred.

This faculty member will teach five classes in an academic year (3/2 load) and set the direction for expansion of a visual effects curriculum. Though the primary responsibility is to teach visual effects courses, the ideal candidate will also demonstrate teaching versatility in at least one additional subject matter related to visual communication, such as:
• Emerging Media
• Filmmaking and Television Production
• Virtual and Augmented Reality
• Design
• UX

The candidate should demonstrate an ability to connect technology to the enhancement of story experiences for users and viewers of media. Being a problem solver and good team player is a must, as the strength of the school lies in the interconnection of faculty skills and agendas—from traditional thinking, to digital asset management, to visual discovery—and collaborations created throughout all areas of the School.

Candidates must demonstrate the potential to bring national visibility to the School through academic, creative or professional engagement.
