Position Description
The Research Director is responsible for project leadership, commercial and sales bid approaches for project engagements. This position handles all phases of the UX product suite, including bidding and scoping, preparation, execution, and delivery. The Director position acts as an independent team leader, leading with little oversight while overseeing multiple projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Research Director operates autonomously and confidently managing clients, leading projects and writing or designing deliverables. This position mentors researchers and research leads.

Specific responsibilities include:

• Oversight of research material preparation and implementation of best practices.
• Provide oversight and guidance to moderators and note takers. Execute these activities independently when appropriate while simultaneously managing a project.
• Identify final client deliverables that will address research objectives, and independently develop or oversee the development of those final deliverables, including research reports, executive summaries, and design recommendations.
• Effectively and efficiently review deliverables and provide constructive, actionable feedback. Communicate these deliverables to clients effectively.
• Recommend redesign of application if needed. Leads finding workshops. Defines ways to integrate research and design on specific projects.
• Ensure quality of service delivery for all direct reports where applicable, as well as for all projects supervised. Actively collect feedback on direct report performance where applicable, and implement improvement plans on an individual level.
• Maintain a solid understanding and fluency with UX products. Support VPs and KAMs to recommend approaches and create proposals and budgets with supervision. Identify an area of focus to improve the UX business.
o This focus may be developing or refining methods or tools used by the business, developing or refining internal training or onboarding, general process refinement, or other areas with manager approval.
o Optionally, demonstrate independent proficiency in business development skills and lead sales calls, scoping, bidding, and proposal efforts with minimal oversight.

Opportunities to Grow
As a UX Director you will have the opportunity to:

• Manage multiple and/or large complex projects in a lead role. Coach specialists on the development of these skills. Formally (with direct reports) or informally provide constructive feedback with the intent to foster development of the team.
• Mentor and coach Specialists in the development of project management skills, including internal and external processes tied to service delivery, such as timekeeping, expenses, and vendor management.
• Become highly proficient in communication of deliverables with the ability to defend insights and recommendations.
• Grow client relationships where the client comes to you first.
• Demonstrate ability to anticipate client questions and manage ambiguity in client requests.
• Develop the ability to independently assess project and client risks and prepare team to mitigate those risks with support from VPs.
• Display a positive and constructive attitude when contributing as a project member or a project lead. Instill confidence in clients with all communications.
• Contribute to GfK’s position as thought leaders by writing blogs, white papers, and presenting at conferences.

Experience and Skills:
• Solid consulting skills are required, strong client management skills are also critical for success.
• Mastery of core UX skills (teaching and mentoring) to educate the team.
• Must have an exceptional understanding of the larger picture of UX engagements, and experience in managing multiple projects with proper delegation of activities is a business imperative.
• Ability to network at all levels with self-confidence. Capable of winning business and building meaningful client relationships.
• Strong commercial management skills with demonstrated success in client management.
• Competent skills in moderator’s guide development, analysis and recommendations for reporting.
• Ability to orchestrate a variety of projects types and to utilize different UX techniques.
• Project management skills for logistics and planning and team activity execution.
• Communication skills to explain design justification and flexibility to adapt to client needs.
• 3-7 years’ experience in related field (i.e., user experience research or design).

• Bachelor’s degree in human factors, HCI, Psychology, Industrial Engineering, Industrial Design, Visual Design, Behavioral Sciences or equivalent experience is required (Master’s degree or higher preferred).
