Full-time UI/UX Designer

at Opus One Solutions in Toronto

Who we are

Creating a planet fueled by reliable, clean energy isn’t what keeps us up at night; it’s what get’s us out of bed. At Opus One Solutions, we pursue solutions that will change how countries access and distribute electrical energy. From microgrids that keep things running in the event of an outage to how Tesla's latest batteries can help accelerate the integration of renewable energy. From how electric utilities can optimize their operations and reduce their carbon footprint to how every homeowner will feed energy into a power grid fueling the electrical sharing economy.

At Opus One Solutions, we believe some of the best talent in the tech industry share our passion for delivering technology that matters, and that will make a difference, in our lifetime and beyond. We want to work with people who love the complexities of software; who believe in its power to transform the world to a better place.

Good people know that great ideas are everywhere and what matters most is practical execution. Turning vision into reality is the hard part. But, when it’s creating technical solutions that support access to renewable energy, it’s an engineering feat worth contributing to.

Our tech stack

The software we develop interacts with electrical devices in the real world where the outcome matters. Our goal is to develop a revolutionary UX that takes big data and distills it down to compelling visualisations that are easily understood by experts. Under the hood, we're using modern frameworks (REACT, Python) and follow an agile process.

The opportunity

Opus One Solutions is looking for a UI/UX Designer who will be entrusted with guiding the development of our all important UX.We need someone who is passionate about designing innovative, engaging products that deliver both business value and a great experience for users. A Designer who’s able to build great relationships with subject matter experts and convert their knowledge of energy and power systems into actionable designs. Someone who has the maturity to champion their design choices while respecting the work and input of the engineers.

This is a role for a UI/UX Designer who wants to gather requirements, present ideas, make decisions and create rapid prototypes. Someone who approaches complex information with straightforward questions, who knows how to get detailed information from power systems people and how to drill down to the essence of what is needed.

Who are you?

You are a UI/UX Designer with a passion for transforming technical user stories into engaging and intuitive designs. You thrive in the role of UI/UX champion, representing both the voice of the end-user and the best practices in your field. You are looking for a company with a purpose, one that is in an exciting growth phase.

You might be working at a large design or web consultancy, moving from one client project to another. Or, you might be at a late-stage startup where you are the one-stop-shop for design from wireframing to graphics; taking requirements to functional prototypes. You have a virtual artist’s palette and a toolbox of technologies you use to demonstrate your training and your instinct.

What’s in it for you?

Challenges. The electrical power grid is a lifeline to millions of people. It is also an incredibly complex network being controlled by archaic software that was designed decades before UX was a thing.. Your challenge is take power systems blueprints and real-time data about the grid and translate that into an intuitive and easy to understand UX. Think Google maps for electricity..

A chance to be the first. This is a brand new in-house role, and the projects you will work on will be not just local or national but global firsts-of-their-kind. You will set the tone for everything that follows.

Personal and professional satisfaction. You want to do meaningful work. You don’t just want to build pretty mobile screens for e-commerce or B2B. You want to build technology solutions that matter.

We need a UI/UX Designer who can:

- Collaborate - You will work closely with the engineering team to define requirements and understand the needs of the utilities sector.
- Champion - You will provide thought leadership around balancing functional demands with a creative presentation; technical needs with practical experience.
- Design - You will design intuitive interfaces, logical task work flows and responsive layouts that meet the needs and vision of the Utilities sector and the average consumer.
- Create - You will provide insights and create wireframes, storyboards, user flows, process flows and sitemaps to effectively communicate interaction. You will present concepts that are scalable.
- Influence - You will present and defend designs and key milestone deliverables to peers and stakeholders. You will be the voice of the consumer, focused on optimizing how users experience our web application.
- Promote - You will research, establish and promote design guidelines, emerging technologies, best - current - usability practices and accessibility standards.
- Get it done - You will execute all stages of all visual design. From converting business ideas to functional design. From concept to final hand-off to engineering.

What you bring:

- A post-secondary degree. You have a degree in digital design, interaction design, communications or similar as it relates to your training in UI/UX design.
- 3-5 years experience. Your focus is on UI and UX design that simplifies complex software solutions and engages the end-user.
- An innovative approach. Your problem solving is reflective of your creative thinking. You can design user flows, wireframes, prototypes, site maps and visual designs.
- Translation skills. You have the ability to translate technical requirements into high-quality, professional, engaging interfaces.
- Strong technical skills. You have expertise in a range of modern design tools including Sketch, InVision, Framer, Azure as well as tried and true graphics tools such as the Adobe suite of products. Nice to have: knowledge of CSS and SVG.
- An eye for quality design. You have an in-depth understanding of design principles and ability to create a product strategy and envision interaction between web application and end-user.
- Motivation. You want to create an engaging experience driven by a passion for end-result and the end-user display. You have a deep range of UI/UX skills that help unblock the design process early and continuously.
