Full-time Research Director - Human Factors (16-0093)

The UX team at GfK is a large and diverse group of consultants with varied backgrounds and areas of expertise. While we tend to grow our team organically, we currently have a need to expand our base of senior level researchers focused on healthcare and medical device human factors. We are seeking to hire a Senior Research Director to meet that need. The Research Director is responsible for managing multiple UX research projects, with responsibility over all phases of those projects including bidding and scoping, preparation, execution, and delivery. It is expected that this senior director will act as an independent team leader who can represent UX to the healthcare industry both internally and externally. In addition to leading projects, this senior director will be an expert in the application of human factors / usability engineering to the development of medical devices and healthcare-related products. This role also involves acting as a mentor to specialist positions, and working with the UX Health industry lead to develop, refine, and implement best practices in the execution of exploratory, formative, and summative human factors research. The Research Director will also have commercial and sales responsibilities to scope and bid on approaches for project engagements. This position requires direct experience in healthcare / medical device human factors, and a desire to focus efforts in this space. Strong candidates will have at least 5 years’ experience planning, managing, and executing programs of human factors research for pharmaceutical or medical device manufacturers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Owns one or more strategic initiatives that have direct impact on the success of our medical device HF business and leads multiple projects
• Has attained mastery of core HF skills, such that teaching and mentoring are activities necessary to educate the team. Understands the larger picture of UX engagements, using this as a base from which to approach project work and client interactions. Management of multiple projects with proper delegation of activities is a must
• Acting as a mentor to researcher and research leads.
• Work to improve the medical device HF practice by focusing on areas of interest (international standards awareness, root cause analysis training, regulatory requirements for research, etc.)
• Employees at this level will be evaluated on their ability to demonstrate proficiency on the following duties and responsibilities as evaluated by managers
o Manage multiple research projects, which can include small and large-scale medical device HF engagements. Expected to focus on all aspects of project management and execution through to delivery (research / design approach, execution, quality assurance, analysis, etc.)
o Manage final deliverables, reports and presentations to communicate insights. Ensures quality of all work performed by project team members with regular review and interaction with researchers and research leads. Conduct reviews of deliverables when supervising projects.
o Demonstrate familiarity with UX products and commercial aspects of consulting. Work with UX team and key account managers to recommend approaches, methods, and scope of effort with supervision.

Experience and Skills:

• Strong understanding of client management as a skill
• Solid consulting skills are required for the role to be successful in business development, project and team management.
• Proficient in development of human factors research protocols
• Proficient in development of other research materials (e.g., moderator’s guides, recruitment screeners, informed consent)
• Well versed in root cause analysis and human factors validation reporting
• Experienced in the application of human factors engineering to the medical device development process
• Intimate knowledge of international standards, FDA guidance, and industry best practices relevant to medical device human factors (e.g., IEC/ISO 62366-1, HE 75)
• Project management skills for logistics and planning and team activity execution
• Communication skills to explain design justification and flexibility to adapt to client needs
